What is a Screenplay?

Writer's picture: ScreenReadersScreenReaders

The filmmaking process involves many elements. So much so, in fact, that it feels like a miracle when a movie is finally completed and reaches theaters.

Among these elements are acting, directing, lighting, editing, and, of course, screenwriting. In this article, we will explore what a screenplay is, its elements, length, and, overall, what it takes to write a good script.

So, what is a screenplay?

At its core, a screenplay is a movie in written form. In other words, it describes in the present tense what the audience sees and hears in each scene.

Some consider it a blueprint, as the screenplay lays the foundation for all the other elements in a film.

How long is a screenplay?

Screenplays are usually 90 to 120 pages long, with the general rule being that one page translates to one minute of screen time.

What are the elements of a screenplay?

While many people believe screenplays consist only of dialogue, they include much more. The main elements found in a screenplay are:

  • Sluglines: These tell us whether a scene takes place inside or outside (INT/EXT), the scene’s location (e.g., CHARLIE'S HOUSE), and whether it happens during the day or night (DAY/NIGHT).

  • Action lines: These describe what we see and hear in the scene.

  • Dialogue: What each character says, sometimes with parentheticals, which are notes indicating how the dialogue is delivered or an action taken while speaking.

How to write a good screenplay?

Writing a good screenplay is much harder than it seems and requires a careful process.

To create a strong script, the writer must balance a compelling plot, memorable characters, well-paced dialogue, consistent rhythm, a well-explored theme, setups and payoffs, among many other elements.

It’s rare to achieve all this in a first draft, so screenplays usually require multiple rewrites to refine these aspects and elevate the script to its best version.
